What I Read (& Wrote About) in September & October

ree

Welcome to my monthly wrap-up post, where I talk about the books I read in a given month. October's post is a two-for-one special, as it includes my reading and blogging for both September and October, as I didn't write a wrap-up for last month.

All of the excitement surrounding my debut novel's launch meant I didn't have much time to read in September, and I didn't want to publish a wrap-up featuring only one book. (It wouldn't be much of a wrap-up if I had).

Between September and October, I read three books:

ree

Lost by Genta Sebastian

This was an interesting speculative fiction read. I wanted to challenge myself by reading a little bit outside my comfort zone. It was a quick read, with a surprisingly deep story and compelling characters. I found myself reaching the last page and wanting more.

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher

This novel is a modern-day Southern Gothic tale that had me intrigued from the first page. There was a coziness to it that balanced out the horror, when it appeared, very well. I enjoyed how well the author blended the themes surrounding family and family trauma into the plot.

The October Music by A.C. Cross

This book is a collection of flash fiction horror stories that's perfect for Halloween. Each story is only a few pages, but Cross writes with such a compelling voice that I found myself instantly engaged in each one. From ghost stories to more existential threats, the collection has a story that will fit any horror-story itch you might be having.

On a non-reading front, in September & October, I wrote about bringing magic to Harlan County, my methods for handling pre-publication jitters, celebrating the release of my debut novel, lessons I learned from publishing my first book, and provided an update on my current writing projects. I've linked each post, in case they sound like an interesting read.

Until next time!

Magic & Murder in the Holler is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop and most other retailers. I'm also selling signed copies directly on my Ko-Fi shop.
