What I Read in February

I've spent February writing a short story, to take a break from larger, longer projects. You would think that less time writing would equal more time to read, yet that didn't happen. I wasn't able to carve out extra reading time, because things kept popping up that needed my attention.
I also don't want reading to feel like a chore, or something I'm forcing myself to do, so if I'm not in the mood to read, I let myself find other means of occupying my mind.
In February, I read three books.

The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
This was a short but impactful fantasy horror story. The author wasn't afraid to lean into the dark, brutal details found in original fairy tales and weaved a wonderfully complex narrative about a mermaid and plague doctor's travels through a strange, deadly land.

Dame Ophis by Merlina Garance
It was a sweet. atmospheric fantasy read about a lady knight and a witch. While maintaining a cozy feel, the story has plenty of stakes and subverts some classic tropes. It was a quick, enjoyable read.

The Healer by Virginia Boecker
This novella is set in the same world as the author's The Witch Hunter series and serves as a prequel to it. Since I haven't read that series, I can't say how much enjoyment fans of it will get from this novella. This book fell into a gray area for me, as I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it. Some of the aspects of the world really intrigued me but the plot didn't grip me to the point where I feel like I have to read the series now.
